Mini-Documentary: Earthrise – Fog Nets (Video)
Harvesting water from thin air in the foothills of the Andes. More than a million residents living in Peru’s capital Lima do not have access to running water. But in the arid hillsides surrounding the capital – the second driest in the world – farmers are using simple fog nets to catch moisture in the air.
The area’s thick fog condenses on specially erected mesh nets, and drips onto a plastic gutter before collecting in a storage tank. The water is then used to irrigate crops on once barren land.
Russell Beard travels to the foothills of the Andes to see landscapes and communities transformed by these simple fog catchers.

Food Distribution in Brazilian Favela (Video)
877-Why-Islam presents the glimpses of food distribution in the slums of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Food packages were sponsored by Helping Hand (www.hhrd.org). It was amazing how receptive the people were. They said that they want to know more and where should they go to learn more about Islam. They took us to an area where we were able to see the reality of the Favela (slum). It was an area where we ascended some deep steps and at the top they had a very delicate wood platform and behind it was an area where all of their waste (fecal matter, garbage, rats, etc.) are found.

San Francisco Bay Area Palestine activists have declared their first victory in attempting to prevent the offloading of an Israeli cargo vessel at the Oakland Port. Originally planning to show up at 5:00 am Saturday morning to block the ship, activists sent word out late last night that the meeting time had been moved up to 3:00pm, as the ship had delayed its arrival at Oakland in an apparent attempt to avoid the protest.
Activist Mohamed Shehk told The Electronic Intifada that the organizers have been tracking the vessel Zim Piraeus, and realized last night that it had stopped before reaching its Oakland destination, spending the night at sea.
“This delay is seen as a victory for us. It shows how much Zim is trying to avoid our protest, and it shows how effective we can be when we can organize these types of actions,” Shehk said.
