Catering to the needs of hundreds of thousands of students, Turkey’s top religious body has announced plans to construct a mosque in every state university, making it easier for Muslim students to observe their prayers.

My name is Zayd Mikhail and this is the story of how Allah SWT helped me find Islam.
I am from New York, United States and I accepted Islam in 2010 when I was 25 years old. I was born into a Catholic family. I don’t remember how practicing my dad was because my parents divorced at a young age, but my mum has always been dedicated to her religion. She never forced it on me, or any of my brothers, but it was important to her that we attend church once a week with her as part of spending time together.
As a young adult my mum actually almost became a nun for the Catholic Church, but met my dad just before she entered into a nunnery. After church on Sundays, I went to “Sunday School” like many Catholic children do, but I was inquisitive and had dozens of questions after every sermon. I asked things like “If Jesus is God how can he be the son of God?” And “If Jesus died for our sins then we can sin as much as we want and go to heaven?” No one ever gave me any real solid answers for these types of questions.

The ummah’s greatest achievement over the past millennium has undoubtedly been its internal intellectual cohesion. From the fifth century of the Hijra almost to the present day, and despite the outward drama of the clash of dynasties, the Sunni Muslims have maintained an almost unfailing attitude of religious respect and brotherhood among themselves. It is a striking fact that virtually no religious wars, riots or persecutions divided them during this extended period, so difficult in other ways.

Islamic schools or Islamic institutes are places where the basics of the religion of Islam, the principles of the religion of Islam and the ways of Muslims are taught to people who are interested in learning about them. Typically, Islamic schools are attended by Muslims. However, in some cases, they are also attended by people from other religions who are interested in learning about the religion of Islam. An Islamic weekend institute is an institute which is only open on weekends but serves the same purpose as a regular Islamic institute. Islamic weekend schools are typically organized and conducted by Muslim families in their respective residential areas.

THE recognition of Professor Emeritus Tan Sri Mohd Rashdan Baba as Tokoh Akademik Negara 2013 is indeed very appropriate. It is no small task to be a founding vice-chancellor of two public universities at a time when higher education was just finding its feet in the country.
