Mini-Documentary: Earthrise – Fog Nets (Video)

 Harvesting water from thin air in the foothills of the Andes. More than a million residents living in Peru’s capital Lima do not have access to running water. But in the arid hillsides surrounding the capital – the second driest in the world – farmers are using simple fog nets to catch moisture in the air.

The area’s thick fog condenses on specially erected mesh nets, and drips onto a plastic gutter before collecting in a storage tank. The water is then used to irrigate crops on once barren land.

Russell Beard travels to the foothills of the Andes to see landscapes and communities transformed by these simple fog catchers.

There’s the Ice Bucket Challenge. And now there’s the Rice Bucket Challenge.

More than a million people worldwide have poured buckets of ice water over their heads as part of a fund-raising campaign for ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease.

But when word of the challenge made its way to India, where more than 100 million people lack access to clean drinking water, locals weren’t exactly eager to drench themselves with the scarce supply.

Please people, please. There is a right way to support good causes and there is a wrong way. The ice bucket is definitely among the wrong ways.

It is hard to find any food in the arid deserts of Morocco, but the clever goats in these areas have found a way to adapt. They learned to climb argan trees to access the plants’ nutritious berries. Locals sometimes gather the seed pits from goat droppings to make argan oil.
