Phones! Every has one and many of us simply can’t live without them. Phones have come a long way and they now allow us to access tons of information from our finger tips. Our phones are constantly pinging due to notifications from email clients, social media apps, news apps, games and instant messaging apps etc. In the blessed month of Ramadan, we mustn’t let our phones distract us, let’s use this month to get closer to Allah. These 6 tips will help you ‘fast’ from your phones this Ramadan.
One of the earliest Muslims in America: Yarrow Mamout
On 19 January 1824, one of the earliest Muslims in America, Yarrow Mamout, died in Georgetown Virginia.
He was enslaved in West Africa and brought to Maryland in the late 1700s. He eventually received his freedom in 1796 and went on to live, as a Muslim, in Washington DC until he died.
Yasiin Bey aka Mos Def – Umi Says (Video)
An epic night to say the least. Mos Def back stage with a glint in his eye, seeing so many people from diverse backgrounds coming together on Chicago’s South Side in celebration of humanity and civic action. The event, hosted by the Inner City Muslim Action Network (IMAN), Taking it to the Streets, was held is Marquette Park, a place where Dr. King would talk to the people and was met with racism in the past, now the park is becoming a place where people of all races can come in celebration of diversity and our shared humanity! Amazing! We’ve come a long way but have a long way yet to go.
Mos Def was the highlight of the night and his music brought the crowd together and inspired us all. Thank you, good sir, for respecting the deen and for being a gentleman, an artist, and an activist always!
And thank you IMAN for being a pillar of Chicago’s South Side activist community dedicated to social change in all the right directions. You are all inspirational and I am proud to call you family.
Israel/Palestine: a ‘one-state solution’

Israel’s economy minister Naftali Bennett, the leader of the right-wing party “The Jewish Home”, published an article in the New York Times in which he buried the concept of a “two-state solution” as a way out of the Israeli Palestinian conflict. Bennett does not belong to the radical Zionist fringe. Although he is an advocate of extremist colonial Zionist ideas, he is considered to be the successor of Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu. In his Op-ED, Bennett has made a mockery of the policy of the last 20 years, which was connected to the Oslo Accords and the two-state solution. His words won’t bear fruit right now, but they might be in the future.
