Iran says it shot down Israeli drone

Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guard says it has brought down an Israeli stealth drone above the Natanz uranium enrichment site in the centre of the country.

The Guards issued a statement on Sunday saying its forces fired a missile at the drone as it neared its uranium enrichment facility in Natanz, more than 300 km south of the capital, Tehran.

“A spy drone of the Zionist regime [Israel] was brought down by a missile… This stealth drone was trying to approach the Natanz nuclear zone,” the corps said in a statement on its official website sepahnews.com on Sunday.

The statement did not say when it shot down the drone, nor did it elaborate on how the Guards knew the drone was from Israel. Israeli officials could not be immediately reached for comment.

This comes as world powers negotiate with the Iran over its contested nuclear programme.

The West fears it could allow Iran to build a nuclear weapon. Tehran says its programme is for peaceful purposes.
