Basketball: FIBA allows religious head coverings on trial basis

International governing body votes for two-year testing phase that would let players, including Muslims and Sikhs, “maintain their beliefs.”

International basketball’s governing body said Tuesday that players will be allowed to wear religious head coverings, such as hijabs or turbans, on a trial basis in some competitions.

FIBA’s central board met over the weekend at the men’s world cup and voted to allow a two-year testing phase that would let players wear head coverings.

When I first started wearing hijab, my mother would pin it for me every day—a square scarf that she’d fold into a triangle, pin under my chin, and whose ends I would then tie into a little knot on my chest. I’d go to school (where my sister and I were the only girls in hijab) like that, thinking that I looked pretty good, especially if I was wearing a particular blue silky scarf that made 5th-grade me feel glamorous. There were other aspects of my wardrobe that I wished I could change at 10 years old (namely the many denim shirts with flower decals that my mother loved buying me so much)—but I can’t recall feeling inferior to anyone because of my hijab style (or lack thereof, really) at that point in my life.

Muslim Hijab Linked To Less Negative Body Image Among Women

Though to Western women, Muslim women in the Mid-East and Asia seem oppressed because they have no choice in wearing a hijab, the Islamic head- and body-cover common in Muslim culture, studies have shown that Muslim women have a more positive body image.

Women’s head coverings of different religions

Dear sisters, do you know that so much of the whole world actually “wears Hijab?!” YES! The earth is surrounded by the atmosphere and ozone layer. Fresh fruits have peels on them. The sword is preserved in a sheath. An ink pen would dry without a cap. We put paperback and hardback covers on our books. A pen would be thrown away because it became dry and useless without its cap. An apple without a peel becomes rotten. A banana without a peel would change colors. And a woman is a beautiful flower which every one wishes to pick so she should cover herself with the beautiful hiijab. Subhan’Allah, the world is wearing hijab, what about you?

info-pictogram1 Yet another ‘ban the burqa’ debate on tv featuring 2 muslim women. It is good to see the moderator takes a fairly neutral stance, and doesnt favour one side over the other. Once again, we see an uncovered woman, Mona Eltahawy, with a distorted sense of reality try to force her personal opinions on the whole world, and it is great to see that she is completely dominated by a woman wearing a niqab. Hebah Ahmed not only dispells all of her false arguements, but also raises some important points that clearly make her the winner of this ‘ban the burqa’ debate.

John Lewis’s new line, hijabs to wear at school: Department store signs contract with schools in London and Liverpool to offer conservative Islamic clothing

By: Sean Poulter

John Lewis is offering the hijab in its school uniform department for the first time.

The headdress is to be sold in the company’s stores in London and Liverpool after it signed contracts with two schools – one which was set up to educate Muslim girls and a second that welcomes pupils from all religious communities.

The hijab covers the head and chest and is worn by Muslim women after the onset of puberty as a sign of modesty in the presence  of men who are outside their immediate family.
