Ebola death toll crosses 4,000 mark

More than 4,000 people have died in the Ebola epidemic that broke out in West Africa at the start of the year, according to the latest figures released by the World Health Organisation.

The WHO said on Friday that as of October 8, 4,033 people have died of Ebola out of a total of 8,399 registered cases in seven countries. The last toll put the figures at 3,865 dead from 8,033 cases.

Gaza death toll surpasses that of Cast Lead as count hits 1,437

GAZA CITY (Ma’an) — The Palestinian death toll in the ongoing Israeli assault on Gaza surpassed that of Operation Cast Lead on Thursday as the number of Palestinians killed by Israeli attacks hit 1,437.

In the most recent lethal Israeli attack, an airstrike hit the al-Bayoumi family home in al-Nusairat refugee camp, killing at least 11 Palestinians and injuring at least 45.

According to the Palestinian Center for Human Rights, 1,417 Palestinians were killed during Israel’s infamous three-week offensive on Gaza in 2008-2009.

Some 5,303 people were injured during Cast Lead, while at least 8,265 have been injured throughout Operation Protective Edge, Israel’s name for its current offensive.

India landslide death toll rises

Heavy rain has hampered rescue efforts to dig through a remote village in western India where at least 30 people died as a landslide swept away scores of houses, possibly trapping many more people under debris, officials said.

They had already worked through the night using floodlights mounted on jeeps and earthmoving vehicles to pull eight injured people out of the mud and twisted wreckage, Vitthal Banot, a disaster management official, said on Thursday.

They were taken to a nearby government-run hospital, but their injuries were not life threatening.

Gaza death toll rises to 1,283

The Palestinian death toll from a devastating Israeli onslaught on the Gaza Strip rose to 1,283, according to a Health Ministry spokesman.

“At least 54 Palestinians were killed in Israeli bombardments in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday, taking the death toll to 1,283,” Ashraf al-Qodra told Anadolu Agency.

He said that 170 people were also injured in Wednesday’s Israeli attacks.
