Documentary: Wave upon wave (Video)
The war in Syria has increased the already growing numbers of immigrants crossing the Mediterranean towards Europe, often via Libya. This has resulted in more boat accidents and deaths in the Mediterranean, particularly off the Italian island of Lampedusa. We follow the story of Syrians fleeing conflict, first to Libya and then to Europe on journeys fraught with danger and turmoil.

The news: Just as the number of fleeing refugees passed the 3 million mark on Friday, the United Nations has declared the war in Syria to be the “biggest humanitarian crisis of our era,” according to a statement by António Guterres, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.
