It’s a ritual that is continuing now with the Sydney hostage crisis, in which a deranged self-styled sheikh named Man Haron Monis took several people hostage in a downtown café.

Here is what Muslims and Muslim organizations are expected to say: “As a Muslim, I condemn this attack and terrorism in any form.”

Random Muslim Person finds the Facebook fan page of said speaker. They now feel compelled to comment on every single one of their statuses. For example:

Popular Islamic speaker Facebook update: “alhamdulillah Allah (swt) has blessed our family with a new baby, please keep us in your duas.” Random Muslim Person commenting on this status: “OMG SHEIKH CAN YOU PLEEEEEZ VISIT ME IN ANTARCTICA ITS MY DREAM TO MEET YOUUUUUU!!!” The only way this quote could be any more accurate is if it had an Emoji after every third word.

Love it or hate it, celebrity speaker culture is here. I wrote about this topic previously from the perspective of seeking fame. Now it is time to write from the perspective of how we view and approach Islamic speakers.

Israel-Gaza conflict: ‘Israel must stop punishing Gaza’s people,’ pleads UN commissioner

The United Nations’ top humanitarian official in the Middle East yesterday issued an impassioned appeal for a new deal for Gaza to end the “collective punishment” of its 1.8 million inhabitants imposed by Israel’s seven-year blockade of the territory.

As Egyptian mediators prepared to renew efforts today to persuade Israel and Hamas to agree a durable peace deal to end more than a month of conflict, Pierre Krähenbühl, Commissoner General of the UN Palestinian refugee agency UNRWA, warned: “You cannot just return to the pre-existing conditions under the blockade.”

The ending of the blockade is one of Hamas’s key demands in the Cairo peace talks. Yesterday, Hamas’s head of foreign affairs, Osama Hamdan, said on his official Facebook page that Israel’s position did not meet the aspirations of the Palestinians. And he warned: “Israel must accept the demands of the Palestinian people or face a long war.”
