Nouman Ali Khan is a young, dynamic daee, who approaches Islam in a sympathetic, understandable and practical way. He moved to the United States at a young age, and rediscovered the beauty of Islam while in college, from which he was motivated to learn it in greater depth. After studying Arabic in Saudi Arabia and later in Pakistan, he founded the Bayyinah Institute, under which he has successfully trained thousands to master the Arabic language.

While his dakwah activities are centred in the United States, his lecture sessions, which cover a variety of topics, are available on You Tube. His appeal largely stems from his ability to put religion in the relevant social context – his realistic approach and acknowledgement of the social background in which most people live – has made him popular especially among the young adults.

HOTD: What is your favourite surah/hadith?

Nowadays it’s Surah al Qasas.

HOTD: Which of the Companions of the Prophet do you identify closest with or is your favourite?

Mus’ab Ibn Umar Embassador of the Qur’an!

HOTD: Who are your modern day role models?

People you guys don’t know. Friends that are much older and have raised great children and I only wish to accomplish what they have with their kids.

HOTD: Someone wants to come back to Islam but doesn’t know where to start. What would you tell him?

The fact that they’re reading this means they already started. Talk to Allah and tell Him your situation. Ask Him for counsel. He will bring people and opportunities into your life you couldn’t even have imagined.

HOTD: What makes you stand out from other prominent dae’es is your relatively young age. What made you decide to take this path so early in life?

Arsenal player Abou Diaby discusses faith and football with the FA

Abou Diaby

With a brief explanation detailing key features of Ramadan, the Football Associationwebsite publishes an interview with Arsenal football player, Abou Diaby, in which he discusses faith, fasting and football.

With Ramadan underway, Diaby talks about the impact of fasting on performance and the way players deal with the demands of faith and football. He states “It is really difficult to fast at the moment, during pre-season. Some players can handle it – it is different from one player to another.

“All the days I miss during Ramadan I make up during the rest of the year – for example when I have days off or a light session I can fast, but when we have a hard session or a match I don’t fast.”

Diaby talks about his faith and its impact telling the FA, “It is something that I have had in my heart. I take it from my parents and from the way I grew up.

“It has helped me to be a better person, definitely.”

Diaby also touches upon the positive role models footballers can be saying, “The young Muslims want to see role models – somebody who is dedicated to his religion but also someone who is achieving something in his life.”

According to the FA, Diaby appreciates the understanding and support he receives from the club and its manager, Arsene Wenger.

He states “Arsene Wenger knows that Ramadan is a special moment for all the Muslim players. But at the same time we have a contract to the club and we be at our best to do our jobs. So we have to find a balance during Ramadan.

“My contract to my club, or to whatever my profession is, is part of who I am and my own morality so I need to respect that, and that’s why I don’t fast during Ramadan, but there is always a compensation. The religion is very flexible.”

On Ramadan and the rituals of opening fast and Tarawih prayers, Diaby said, “It is a very good time. We get together at home as a family but it’s also when we strengthen our links with the community.

“We have the prayers at night where all the community pray together – it is a very powerful moment.”

Diaby further expressed his belief that the perception of Muslims in football has changed positively.

“There has been a big improvement in football’s understanding of Islam. But then I believe today football has a better understanding of religion as a whole. Judaism and Christianity too – all the religions.”

The football industry has increased in its efforts to accommodate Muslim players’ needs by offering non-alcoholic celebratory drinks for Man of the Match awards, introducing prayer room facilities at clubs and challenging Islamophobia as well as racism in sport.

Such endeavours follow a recommendation by the Housing Association that the FA and league clubs do more to engage with young British Muslims through sport.

NEGATIVE INFLUENCES OF CELEBRITIES ON TEENS

Technology has given people easy access to everyone’s lives. Fans are able to feel a part of their favorite celebrity’s everyday life by tracking their whereabouts. They feel up-to-date on what is happening in their lives. Thus, giving them a connection and a sense of closeness to celebrities. The ability to constantly know what is happening with celebrities—what they are wearing, where they are going, and what they are interested in—affects how society lives their lives. People feel the need to emulate their favorite star, so they imitate their clothes, accessories, and even attempt to attend the same type of places.

Teenagers are the most common people trying to copy their idols. Celebrities have the easiest time influencing teens because they are so vulnerable. Teenagers are in search for self-esteem, their identity, and a “cool” self-image. All of these aspects of a teenager’s life are detrimental to who they will become. The power of the celebrity has taken control of these teens and ended with negative influences.

A teen needs to satisfy his need for love, acceptance, and success in order to experience high self-esteem. He gains his self-esteem by pleasing his parents, peers, and society. This is a time in an adolescent’s life where they feel the most need for acceptance. This need for acceptance drives teens to be more experimental, innovative, and sometimes controversial. They are at a time in their life where they keep reinventing themselves. They may start out as a jock, then become a punk, then preppy, and so on and so forth.

According to Teenager Research Unlimited, fun is the number one description for the teenage generation. Teenagers emphasize freedom, yet do not want to take on the responsibilities and obligations of adults. Fun links the teens to experimentation with illegal or illicit substances. Their ideas on life are more in the clouds than in reality. Teens are thinking, dreaming, and even planning a few years ahead. This, in turn, is making celebrities a few years older than them more desirable. Teens are fans of Miley Cyrus, who was caught on film smoking marijuana, Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan, who went to jail for drinking and drugs. Teens consider this to be okay, and do not let instances like this hinder their idols’ likeability.
