In modern times, we have become wonted to living on our own; as if God does not exist. Many of us feel that religion is no longer apposite; books of religious teachings have been replaced by modern books of science and “progressive” thinking. The Qur’an – Is it relevant today? Or has it gone into the oblivions of the past as have many other books?

Allah swt  says in the Qur’an:

And the Messenger has said, “O my Lord, indeed my people have taken this Qur’an as [a thing] abandoned.”(Al-Furqān, 25:30)

How many of us would like that to happen on the ? He SAW  left behind the the , the sempiternal miracle, the words of Allah Allah Subhanahu-wa-Taala  between our hands, and we have simply left it on shelves to collect dust!

The Pervasive Effects of Humility

Mideast Saudi Arabia Hajj

By: Lobna Mulla

“A spoonful of humility a day, keeps the ego away.”  Well, it’s not the original saying, but it sends a clear message.  Truly realizing the benefits of being humble can assist us in achieving success not only in this life, but also in the hereafter.

According to Merriam-Webster’s dictionary, to be humble is to not be proud, arrogant, or assertive.  In Arabic, tawaada (humility) literally means to lower one’s self or to submit.  Taking these definitions together and adding the characteristic of humility as relayed in Qur’anic verses and Prophetic examples, we begin to have a richer understanding of its importance and practical applications.

The earth is not our final destination

Once a man visited Abu Dharr (radi Allahu anhu) and began looking at the contents of his house but found it quite bare. He asked Abu Dharr (radi Allahu anhu), “Where are your possessions?” Abu Dharr (radi Allahu anhu) replied, “We have a house yonder (meaning the Hereafter) to which we send the best of our possessions.” The man understood what he meant and said, “But you must have some possessions so long as you are in this abode.” “The owner of this abode will not leave us in it” replied Abu Dharr (radi Allahu anhu).

The earth is not our final destination. We are to use it to make preparations for the next life. Concerning the life of this world Eesa (Jesus) (alaihis salaam) said, “This world is like a bridge, cross it and do not build on it.” This life is a bridge from our previous existence as soul to our next existence in the Hereafter. Houses are built on land. The most appropriate place to build, the focus of our attention, should be the land that we will set foot on once we cross the bridge that is our earthly existence. People like Abu Dharr (radi Allahu anhu) set the example for us.

Towards The House: Protocols for The Pilgrim

Hajj has external and internal protocols. In this short piece, I hope to draw your attention to its subtle ones that touch your soul, and enhance your faith.

1. You should choose a righteous person to travel with, ensuring that your income is from permissible sources. Pure sources illuminate your heart, and a righteous companion reminds you of good and keeps you from evil

2. You should avoid business transactions while in route because they will weaken your focus and scatter your thoughts

3. You should be generous while traveling, feeding others with an open heart and picking the best words when speaking with others

4. Avoid arguments, shouting matches and speaking about worldly matters. You should limit your speech, after your basic needs, to reciting the Qur’an and the remembrance of Allāh

5. You should be pleased with your expenditures and the hardships you encounter, viewing them as a sign that your pilgrimage is accepted, considering them all as rewards for you in the Hereafter.
