Kompong Cham, Cambodia – On a dark October night in 1975, Sos Min crept along the roads of Svay Khleang village clutching a drum. Min’s task would almost certainly end in his death, but weeks of planning and a growing sense of despair had strengthened his resolve.

For months, the Khmer Rouge had placed increasing pressure on this historic Cham Muslim village. The regime’s cadres shut down mosques, ordered an end to praying and forced villagers to eat pork. Women were made to discard their hijabs and cut their hair, imams and religious teachers were abducted in the dead of night – their screams ringing out across the village.

Palestinian teenager tweets real-time bombing in Gaza: “I might die tonight”

A Palestinian teenager is using social media to give a devastatingly frightening insight into the situation in Gaza.

16-year-old Farah Baker, who goes under the name Farah Gazan on Twitter, is amassing thousands of followers and re-tweets on Twitter after sharing a night of her private terror from her bedroom as rockets fell through Gaza overnight.

“I might die tonight,” she wrote.

The teenager tweets furiously between attacks; posting video footage and sound grabs of bombs and missiles as they fly through the air and hit unsuspecting targets.

The Israeli attack on Gaza has killed 1000 Palestinians

It is imperative not to be numbed by the death toll numbers reported every day from Gaza.

According to the most recent calculation, 1000 Palestinians have been murdered by the Israeli army, majority of them civilians, who have nowhere to run. Trapped by Egypt from one side and Israeli army from the other, the mostly defenceless Palestinians are being slaughtered in more than two weeks of relentless bombing by what is considered to be the fifth most powerful military on earth, armed to its teeth by the United States and its European allies. 

But what does that absolute number – 1000 – actually mean? How would this number of Palestinians in Gaza compare if proportionately these bombs were to be dropped say on the US, or UK, or China, or India, or Germany?
