How I’m Trying to Raise 8 Intelligent, God-Conscious Children: Interview with Sharifah Mastura Al Jifri
I’d met the eldest daughter at law school: a hafidhah who was fluent in English, Arabic and Malay, a bright student who’d studied 3 different syllabuses and was a remarkably disciplined girl for her age. When she told me all her other 7 siblings were or are becoming huffaadh and were being educated and brought up like she was too, I couldn’t wait to meet their wonder mom.
When I first met their amazing mother Sharifah Mastura Al Jifri – a petite, serene Singaporean woman; and the rest of her beautiful children at their house; I knew I’d never seen an entire productive family like this one in my life, mashaAllah.
Yusuf Talia, despite his challenges with Muscular Dystrophy was truly an inspiration to all that knew him. He was the President of the MSA Union, vice president of the Wits SRC. He was also very active with the Free Palestine campaign. In his time at university he studied a science degree and a accounting degree. Truly a legend.

Do you always dream of the years ahead when you will hit your first million, memorise the Qur’an, or break some world record? Or perhaps you jump, to a few months ahead – getting published, married or launching an online business.
Whatever your big dream is, you know what I’m talking about, right?

We are witnessing a growing trend of addictions to what I would like to call demoralising desires and temporary pleasures.
We know of our purpose, we know of our destination — so why do we continue to live for the dunya (this world, as opposed to the Hereafter) as if it were our only goal and the real essence of our existence?
This life is but a preparation for the next. We must focus on our destination and choose our paths wisely.
And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me. [Qur’an: Chapter 51, Verse 56]
Yet we find ourselves sitting in front of televisions, computer screens and game consoles, investing our precious time in unprofitable matters, and in many cases, haram exposure. We waste away our wealth in masking our insecurities and fulfilling a moment’s thrill for a lifetime of debt. We are even shamelessly falling deep into the culture of drugs and alcohol despite their clear forbiddance in the Qur’an!
“We watch so many movies that pictures we see from Gaza are almost the same concept, just a dead body behind a screen”
By: Mohammed Zeyara
“People are desensitized to pictures from Gaza’s massacres now.” Wait what? Allow me to say something. Growing up in the west, the only massacres we’ve seen are massacres in movies. We watch so many movies that pictures we see from Gaza are almost the same concept, just a dead body behind a screen. So we didn’t just get desensitized, most of us have always been desensitized. To the people who keep telling me do not share. I know and understand where you’re coming from, and I will try to take your advice. Please understand I’m currently fighting between my emotions and my professionalism. But I grew up across the street from Al-Shifa Hospital. The sirens of the ambulances used to wake us up almost every morning. My friends and I used to always play in Al-Shifa’s garden. And we’ve witnessed all these images in real life. And when you witness these things in real life, it’s a total different story than just a picture. After seeing bodies come through the doors of al-shifa doors, then I would go home to check the news, I saw absolutely nothing. The news always hid the killings in Gaza just like they are hiding many oppressions happening now in Syria, Burma and Pakistan. So I got angry, and I still am. I promised to show the world what the eyes of Gaza see everyday. Because when you see the pictures online, there is a whole story behind the picture, not just a dead body. There was love, happiness, compassion, dreams, goals that were killed when the soul left that body. Do not just look at how horrible the picture looks, the concept is far more greater than that.
I hope you understand.
