We have categorised waswasa (repeated, unfounded doubts and fears) into two kinds: waswasa of thought and waswasa of action. We have already dealt with the first category. Today we shall talk about waswasa of action.

Sometimes people get excessive doubts about the tasks they are doing. For example: while doing wudhu (ablution), performing the ritual bath (Ghusl),performing the prayers etc. They get doubts whether they have performed these actions strictly in accordance to the set norms or not. Such doubts are very harmful for homes. A person who nurses repeated doubts about his own actions becomes an outcast from the society. He can no longer feel love for his home. Those in the audience who have the tendency of doubting their own actions should give particular attention to this talk.

Q&A: How can I stop thinking about women?

Question:

How can I stop thinking about women? I try too fast but don’t have enough money to get married and I try to lower my gaze but it’s so difficult. Please advise.

_______________________________________________

Assalamu Alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh

Thank you for your question.

Allah says in the Quran:

“Tell the believing men to lower their gaze (from looking at forbidden things)…” [Surat al-Nur: 30]

Al-Junayd (rahimahullah) was asked: “With what do we seek help to lower our gaze?”

He replied: “Your knowledge that Him looking upon you precedes whatever you look at.”

In regard to these verses Ibn al-Qayyim (rahimahullah) says: “So He (Allah) put purity after lowering of the gaze and protecting of the private parts. For this reason lowering the gaze away from the prohibited things warrants three great benefits. The first of them is the sweetness of Imaan and the pleasure that comes from it, which is more sweet and pleasing than that which he diverted his eyes away from for Allah’s sake. Verily, whoever abandons a thing for Allah’s sake, He (Subhaanahu WaTa’ala) compensates him with better than it…The second benefit is a light in the heart and quality of intuition… and the third benefit is the strength of the heart and steadfastness and courage. So Allah (Subhaanahu WaTa’ala) would give him, by His strength, the ability of wisdom and substantiation, and the devil would flee from him as it has been mentioned in the saying, “Whoever fears his whims, the devil would race out of his shadow.”

So part of the answer dear brother is recognizing that Allah is watching you and that by looking at that which He has forbidden, you risk losing the opportunity to see Him on the Day of Judgment.

As far as practical tips are concerned:

1. Install a firewall on your computer/laptop that filters lewd material
2. Enroll in a program online to help you deal with pornography. Purify your gaze is one that I would recommend.
3. Try not to put yourself in a situation that will make it harder for you. So avoid places that will cause your gaze to wander and also being alone with your computer/laptop/TV.
4. Fasting controls ones desires and builds that consciousness in Allah needed to fight this disease.
5. Remind yourself frequently of the reward of paradise for lowering your gaze.

May Allah make it easy for you and grant you strength and firmness. Ameen

And Allah knows best.

Why Israel Fears the Boycott

JERUSALEM — IF Secretary of State John Kerry’s attempts to revive talks between Israel and the Palestinian Authority fail because of Israel’s continuing construction of illegal settlements, the Israeli government is likely to face an international boycott “on steroids,” as Mr. Kerry warned last August.

These days, Israel seems as terrified by the “exponential” growth of the Palestinian-led Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (or B.D.S.) movement as it is by Iran’s rising clout in the region. Last June, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu effectively declared B.D.S. a strategic threat. Calling it the “delegitimization” movement, he assigned the overall responsibility for fighting it to his Strategic Affairs Ministry. But B.D.S. doesn’t pose an existential threat to Israel; it poses a serious challenge to Israel’s system of oppression of the Palestinian people, which is the root cause of its growing worldwide isolation.

The Two Fears

The-Two-Fears-600x319

In this blessed month of Ramadan, while many of us reflect on our lives, some of us desperately want to leave riba (usury) – in our jobs, in our finances, in our lives.

But something always holds us back.

According to many of our greatest scholars, among the two greatest fears preventing us from leaving the haram and the makruh are fear of poverty and fear of what other people may think.

As we approach the blessed last ten days of this month, let us ponder upon how these two fears affect our own lives. Sheikh Moulay al-Arabi al-Darqawi writes:

“Attacks by the self and shaytan do not get the better of us from any direction as much as that of concern for provision. Yet our Lord — glory be to Him! — has sworn to us by Himself in His Book,

“It is certainly the truth, just as you have speech.” (51:23), and, “Instruct your family to perform the prayer and be constant in it. We do not ask you for provision. We provide for you, and the best end result is gained by taqwa.” (20:132)

There are many verses with this meaning and many hadiths of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace…I only mention this to you out of the fear that what has happened to most people will happen to you. We see most of them have many means — in the deen and in this world, and yet they are intensely afraid of poverty…
