Swedes expressing solidarity with Muslims have organized events of support and love after a series of recent attacks on mosques.

In the city of Uppsala, where anti-Muslim rhetoric was scrawled onto a mosque wall on Thursday, hundreds of people pasted red paper hearts and messages of support onto the building’s entrance ahead of Friday prayers.

A day before the so-called love bombing, police said a Molotov cocktail was hurled at the mosque without causing a fire.

Devine Carama Presents: “Power of Words” – Hiphop & Poetry (Video)

info-pictogram1 My presentation focuses on poetry and hiphop and how those forums can be used as an alternative outlet in expressing their feelings (as oppose to lashing out or fighting) as well as a way to inspire others. I also talk about how students talk to each other as well as certain names that they call each others. My main focus is how the words we use have power so its up to us to choose whether we use that power in a good way or a bad way. My presentation varies depending on the age group and/or specific things individual teachers or principles want me to touch on.

“I am proud of my achievement”, “I feel proud being myself”, “Proud to be a father”,” and so on…we usually hear people expressing their accomplishments with pride.

Being proud or feeling of pride has become so common that it is no more seen as immodest and improper.

Pride or (takabbur) in Arabic is, in fact, a negative feeling. Pride, arrogance, egotism, self-importance are among the most malicious inner diseases of the heart and mind.

The viral NYC Catcall video has caused a stir in social media and online forums. It records a woman receiving over 100 catcalls from men as she walks the streets of New York City for 10 hours.

Just consider the 100,000+ youtube comments alone. While most commenters found the behavior of the catcalling men disgusting, some took issue with how the woman in the video was dressed. These commenters were daring enough to suggest that perhaps she would have attracted less negative attention had she dressed more “modestly.”

This suggestion, in turn, was met with backlash. How dare anyone “blame the victim” by suggesting that a woman change the way she dresses because men cannot or will not act with common decency!

What do we make of all this?

Is it completely outlandish to suggest that the way a woman (or man) dresses has an impact on how others treat her (or him)?

White House says US can’t stop ‘tsunami’ of boycott and isolation if Israel won’t end ‘occupations’

US Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs Philip Gordon

The press is expressing marvel/shock at a speech by Philip Gordon, a White House adviser, saying that Israel’s ongoing “occupations” and settlements are driving its international isolation and the boycott movement.

“Philip Gordon blasted Israel,” says PowerLine.  “[H]is oration read as though Gordon is a recent arrival from Planet Zog who has mistaken the Middle East for Finland,” says David Horovitz. His paper captures the story:

“Top Obama official blasts Israel for denying Palestinians sovereignty, security, dignity.

“‘How can Israel have peace if it’s unwilling to delineate a border, end the occupation?’ asks White House Mideast chief, Phillip Gordon, in blistering Tel Aviv speech”

Is Israel losing Latin America?

In 2009, Venezuela and Bolivia cut diplomatic ties with Israel, expressing disgust at the country’s actions during “Operation Cast Lead” – a three-week conflict that included an Israeli ground invasion of the Gaza Strip and caused heavy civilian casualties.

The following year, after Israel’s raid on the Mavi Marmara flotilla that killed 10 people, Nicaragua announced it would suspend ties with Israel.

Since the beginning of Israel’s current offensive on the Gaza Strip against Hamas, five Latin American countries – Ecuador, Brazil, Peru, Chile and El Salvador – have withdrawn their ambassadors to Israel in protest. Meanwhile, Bolivia has dubbed Israel a “terrorist state” and rescinded its visa-free policy for Israeli travellers, and Chile has also suspended free-trade negotiations with Israel.
