The Cedid Atlas (The New Atlas in Ottoman Turkish) was one of the first printed atlases in the Muslim world. It was commissioned by the Ottoman government in 1803 as part of its 19th century reforms to bring the empire up to par with other European powers. All of the maps in the atlas were thus adapted from an earlier atlas made by the English cartographer, William Faden. Only 50 copies were printed of the atlas, and of those, only about 10 survive today.

I am a “European” Muslim.

I became Muslim when I was 17.

I am living now in Potsdam, Germany and I want to share my experience with you as a Muslim in a non-Muslim state.

As a convert to Islam, I think it’s much easier to follow the deen (religion) than a born Muslim who is been raised up here.

EASTERN TEXTS MEETING WESTERN QUILLS – THE FIRST ENGLISH TRANSLATION OF THE QURAN

By: Lubaaba Amatullah

When asking fellow Muslims about the first English Qur’an, the response is frequently a reference to the 1930 translation by Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall. Less frequently an excited voice speaks of the George Sale Qur’an of 1734. However, British Islamic – and Quranic – history extends long beyond that.

The first rendering of the Qur’an into a European Western language, Latin, was completed by the English scholar Robertus Retenensis. It was entitled ‘Lex Mahumet Pseudoprophete’ (‘The Law of Mahomet the False Prophet’) and was completed in 1143. The translation enjoyed popularity and wide circulation, later to become the main basis for further contemporary translations into Italian, German and Dutch.[1] Between 1480 and 1481, not long after the fall of Constantinople to the Ottomans in 1453, the first bilingual translation into Latin, with accompanying Arabic, appeared composed by the Jewish convert to Christianity, Flavius Mithridates.[2] In 1647, Andrew Du Ryer produced the first French translation in Paris. This first translation directly from Arabic since the Middle Ages[3] was a marked improvement from those produced over the years since 1143.

I would have loved to join you today on this noble cause to demand Israel stop its aggression against a defenceless people.

• Israel has been violating international law for decades, committing war crimes and crimes against humanity – with complete impunity.

• Defenceless women, children even the disabled and the sick in hospitals are massacred everyday – with no consequences for Israel at all.

• This is not a war against Hamas or terrorists – it is the genocide of a people. This is not a conflict between equals – it is brutal aggression by an occupation army against a people living under a total blockade and siege.

• The blockade and siege of Gaza must be lifted now – the blockade is illegal collective punishment by a cruel occupier that is Israel.

• I ask our European and world leaders, how many more war crimes must

Israel commit; and how many more women and children must it kill with the bombs you sold Israel; before you condemn them as war crimes?

• I ask the UN Secretary General Mr Ban Ki Moon – even after Israel bombs your UN school sheltering women and children, why do you not have the courage to condemn it as a war crime?

• I call on our European governments and the UN to impose sanctions on Israel.

Free Palestine!
