Ebola death toll crosses 4,000 mark

Latest figure put at 4,033 as UN special envoy calls for greater resources and effort to battle epidemic in West Africa.

More than 4,000 people have died in the Ebola epidemic that broke out in West Africa at the start of the year, according to the latest figures released by the World Health Organisation.

The WHO said on Friday that as of October 8, 4,033 people have died of Ebola out of a total of 8,399 registered cases in seven countries. The last toll put the figures at 3,865 dead from 8,033 cases.

GAZA CITY (Ma’an) — A Hamas spokesman on Sunday accused Israel of “stalling” in ongoing negotiations in Cairo to achieve a long-term truce in Gaza, stressing that “the ball is in the Israeli occupation’s court.”

Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri said during a march in solidarity with Palestinian resistance in Rafah that the group’s “priority is to reach an agreement, but the occupiers must stop stalling.”

“We are discussing an agreement from a position of strength, not weakness,” he said, adding: “Either we have an agreement that meets our demands, or no agreement.”

Israel has lost its grip on reality. The death toll in Gaza stands at well over a thousand and continues to rise by the day. The coastal strip has been reduced to rubble. Rather than celebrating Eid this week, Palestinians in Gaza have been burying their dead.

Jon Snow’s poignant message after his return from Gaza on Channel 4 news was heart-breaking. He had been reporting from Al Shifa hospital where he saw many horrific injuries and scores of dead children.

He ended his report with this plea to the public: “If our reporting is worth anything, if your preparedness to listen and watch and read is anything to go by, then together we can make a difference.”

Gaza death toll rises to 1,283

The Palestinian death toll from a devastating Israeli onslaught on the Gaza Strip rose to 1,283, according to a Health Ministry spokesman.

“At least 54 Palestinians were killed in Israeli bombardments in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday, taking the death toll to 1,283,” Ashraf al-Qodra told Anadolu Agency.

He said that 170 people were also injured in Wednesday’s Israeli attacks.

info-pictogram1 Gaza City – At least 100 Gazans have been killed in Israeli bombardment on Tuesday, Gaza officials have said, hours after shells hit the enclave’s only power station.

A thick column of black smoke was seen rising from the power station on Tuesday, mingling with other plumes sent into the air by Israeli shelling.

Gaza officials said the death toll from the invasion had now reached 1,178, with at least 100 killed since midnight on Tuesday. More than 6,800 Gazans had been injured. The AFP news agency reported that one air raid alone in northern Gaza had killed 10 people on Tuesday.
