Prophet Muhammad (saws) said: “Seeking Knowledge is obligatory upon every Muslim.” (Related by Ibn ‘Adiyy, Al-Bayhaqi & Al-Tabarani)
Though this Hadith is known and memorised by most Muslims, the essence, the amount, and the kind of knowledge referred to in this Hadith remains misunderstood by many.
If it is true that the knowledge incumbent upon every Muslim pertains to religious knowledge, or al-‘Ilm al-Shar’i, how deeply does one have to pursue his quest of this knowledge to fulfil his duties and discharge the learning obligations placed upon him? In other words, what are the minimum teachings that every Muslim – male or female – is required to know about his Deen?
This Surah is entitled Ar Rahman, the word with which it begins. This title, however, deeply relates to the subject matter of the Surah too, for in it, from the beginning to the end, the manifestations and fruits of Allah’s attribute of mercy and grace have been mentioned.
1. The Most Merciful
2. Taught the Qur’ān,
3. Created man,
4. [And] taught him eloquence.
5. The sun and the moon [move] by precise calculation,
6. And the stars and trees prostrate.
7. And the heaven He raised and imposed the balance
8. That you not transgress within the balance.
9. And establish weight in justice and do not make deficient the balance.
10. And the earth He laid [out] for the creatures.

How many times when we go swimming whilst we’re trying to get into the water we stop ourselves because it’s too cold, then think to ourselves, “I wish I could turn my nervous sensors off just so I can get into the water”. How many times do we get cut, then treat the wound and think to ourselves, “I treated the wound, why am I still feeling the pain? Surely our body should know that the wounds been treated and stop the pain?”

Ibn Hazm said:
“The jinn are real, and they are creatures created by Allaah. Among them are kaafirs and believers. They can see us but we cannot see them. They eat, have children and die. Allaah says (interpretation of the meanings):
“O you assembly of jinn and Mankind!” [al-An’aam 6:130]
“And the jinn, We created aforetime from the smokeless flame of fire” [al-Hijr 15:27]
Entomologist Dr George McGavin and leafcutter expert Prof Adam Hart will embark on an ambitious project, something that’s never been tried before. They will show us a hidden world. It has taken six months from planning to the final project. They’ve built a new home for one million of nature’s most extraordinary creatures – ants. They fascinate us, they build complex, organized societies and we’ve always drawn parallels between their world and ours.
