There can be only one choice for the world’s most contested area of land, and that is masjid Al-Aqsa in Jerusalem. It is no exaggeration to say that for thousands of years, people have been dying for control over it.

For Muslims, it holds a very important place in our heart. It is the 3rd most holy site in Islam. It is the location that the Prophet was transported to during the journey of Israa and Miraaj. It was the scene for the most extraordinary gathering in the history of mankind – when every Prophet that ever lived were gathered together for a congregational prayer behind Prophet Muhammad.

1. Umayyad Mosque, Damascus, Syria: 96 years after migration (AH)

The site of the Umayyad Mosque was originally a Christian church and a Roman temple prior to that. After the Muslim conquest of Syria, the church was converted into a mosque. Caliph Walid I, who oversaw its conversion, radically altered the layout of the building- a project that was completed in 715. Parts of the outer wall today still date back to the original Roman temple of Jupiter. Inside, an edifice marks the spot where John the Baptist’s (Yahya ibn Zakariyya) head is thought to be buried. A plaque has also been placed above the spot where the head of Imam Husayn (may God be pleased with him) was put on display after he was martyred at Karbala.

Hamas leader calls on Muslims to ‘defend’ Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa mosque

Hamas chief Khaled Meshaal has urged Muslims to “defend” the Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem after Israeli forces restricted the entrance for Palestinians. He accused Israel of trying to seize the site, which is considered holy for both Muslims and Jews.

“We call on all our people inside the country to hurry up to al-Aqsa to defend it,” Meshaal said in a statement from Doha, Qatar.

“We call on the nation to be angry and to send a message of painful anger to the world that the Palestinian people, the Arab and Muslim nation, will not be silent at the Israeli crime,” Meshaal added.

Israeli intrusion into Al Aqsa mosque ‘barbaric’

Abu Dhabi: Shaikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Foreign Minister, on Wednesday condemned the “barbaric intrusion” by the Israeli regime’s special forces into the Al Aqsa Mosque in occupied Jerusalem, “during which worshippers were assaulted and the sanctity of the holy place was defiled, to make way for Jewish visitors on the occasion of the Jewish holiday of Sukkot”.

Shaikh Abdullah said that the Israeli regime’s plans to designate the Bab Al Qataneen gate as a point of entry into the Al Aqsa compound for Jewish extremists could exacerbate the situation.
