CAIRO – A YouTube video shared by a Saudi paper has showed 500 Chinese Muslims reverting to Islam after being touched by the “simplicity” of the funeral of the late King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz.

“They all became Muslims after chanting through loudspeakers ‘there is no God but Allah, Mohammed (PBUH) is the messenger of Allah,” the YouTube film, published by Ajel Arabic language daily, said.

The video showed the Chinese workers gathering near their company offices in the eastern town of Jubail and reciting the Shahada, or the declaration of faith.

CAIRO – French director Isabelle Matic has announced her decision to revert to Islam on her FaceBook account, making the unexpected announcement only a few days after Charlie Hebdo Paris attacks.

“Today, I passed through the first pillar of Islam. There is no god but Allah and Muhammad is His Prophet,” Matic said in a message posted on her Facebook page on January 11.

She followed her announcement with a series of posts in which she thanked Moroccan actor Hicham Bahloul for announcing her decision on Moroccan papers.

In another message, she described how she took the decision and its effect on her beliefs in freedom of expression.

“Between the massacre at the premises of Charlie Hebdo and other event that have followed: I became a Muslim,” Matic wrote.

“Am I still for freedom of expression for all and Charlie Hebdo in particular?! Yes,” Matic wrote yesterday.

“With regard to my position towards the caricatures of the Prophet, I will write you the text of the SMS that I received this morning from a mosque which agreed quite well with my thoughts since the beginning of the cartoons, well before I became a Muslim,” she added

“They are making fun of Muhammad and do not harm Muhammad. They are making fun of a character that they have imagined and to whom they have given a name. This man is not our Prophet,” she wrote.

The new Muslim referred to the early life of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) when non-believers rejected his calls to Islam.

“The Makkans laughed at Muhammad (worthy of praise) in the appellant Modamam (worthy of name calling). The prophet peace be upon him was smiling. Yes, he was smiling! And he said: They are making fun of Modamam and not me,” Matic wrote.

“The wisdom is the answer to provocations. And this is what our beloved Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be with him) has taught us.

“So when Charlie Hebdo will be published insha ‘ allah (God willing), do not pay attention. Do not respond to the provocation. And do not give them of importance,” she added.

In its Wednesday’s edition, Charlie Hebdo magazine features a cartoon of a man they claim to be the prophet of Islam on the cover.

The cover depicts Prophet Mohammed (pbuh) with a tear falling from his cheek, holding a sign that says, “Je suis Charlie” under the headline “All Is Forgiven.”

The edition is the first after two gunmen attacked the magazine’s headquarters in Paris, killing 10 journalists and two policemen. Two of the dead were Muslims, an editor and a police cop.

It culminates the magazine’s long history of offending millions of Muslims worldwide

Muslims have undergone countless trials and suffering during the past few decades. Our oppressors have tortured us, degraded us, raped our women, humiliated our leaders, subjugated our governments but still people are entering Islam, making Tawbah (repentance), reviving their faith, and holding on to the rope of Allah!!! One of the most dangerous attacks has been to our “Modesty”. But Allah is Most Merciful; for despite the pornography, indecent fashion styles, lies and scandal about our culture, Allah has strengthened Muslim women to hold on to Hijab and the Muslim family. May Allah enable Muslim men to appreciate the strength of Muslim women, cherish the gift that a pious Muslim sister gives to the Ummah and repent from ever showing disrespect, malice or ill feeling. May Allah never take this beauty away from us. Surely after hardship and suffering there will come ease, Insha Allah.

As a convert to Islam, you can easily remember the moment that you discovered that Islam was the one and only true religion.

The moment of realization is an intense whirlwind of emotions such as relief, joy, gratitude and peace.

The moments leading up to the taking of the Shahadah, or Islamic declaration of faith, are equally exuberating. You wear your best clothes, travel to the mosque and pronounce the testimony of faith:

Ash hadu an la ilaha illa Allah, wa ash hadu anna Mohammadan rasoolu Allah” (I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad is His Messenger) in public for the very first time.

Afterwards, the Muslims at the mosque will offer their congratulations and so too will the Muslims in your community. Your new faith has lit up your heart and the sense of the Islamic nation surrounds you.

New Muslims & a Stronger Faith

However, it is important to realize that the level of excitement you felt in taking the shahadah will likely fade away as you get back to living. It’s inevitable and it does not necessarily mean that you are a “bad” Muslim or have done anything wrong. The faith, ebbs and flows just like a babbling brook in the middle of a grassy meadow. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

“Faith wears out in the heart of any one of you just as clothes wear out, so ask Allah to renew the faith in your hearts.” (Al-Haakim)

There are several reasons why our faith decreases. Everything from engaging in unlawful activities to committing major and minor sins takes a toll on our faith. The good news is that there are several ways that you can maintain an optimum level of faith and enjoin the good while forbidding the evil.
