“My name is Lavinia and my daughter and I reverted to Islam in 2005. This December it will be 10 years for the both of us. I began wearing hijab immediately after I took my shahada and my family, who are Catholics/Christians were very accepting. My daughter and I have had some rough times dealing with people who only know about Islam through what the media has told them but alhamdulillah we continue to push forward.

We both realize that although people judge us because of our hijab it’s also an opportunity to give dawah because of it. I work in the medical field and every day someone asks me questions about Islam so each day I have the opportunity to give dawah, alhamdulillah. Also, my daughter just recently started at a new school and a muslim girl who has always been afraid to wear her hijab confronted her and hugged her so tightly, mind you they have never met before. This young lady said to my daughter “mashaAllah, you’re wearing hijab and no one judges you. Because of you I will begin wearing my hijab also.”

The next day the young lady came up to my daughter wearing her hijab proudly and she hugged my daughter again and she said “Allah put you in my path to give me the courage to wear my hijab”
So sisters, wear your hijab and know it is for Allah & that we do it for him only. Never be afraid of what people may think, give them the opportunity to approach you and teach them what Islam is really about.”- Lavinia & Arelis (Alhambra, CA)
